On 12 July 2007 a US Apache helicopter engaged a group of suspected insurgents in Bagdad, killing at least 12 people. It was later discovered that two of the dead were journalists and two children had also been injured. The incident was captured by the helicopter’s onboard video camera and the footage leaked to the public by Wikileaks. The episode generated considerable controversy and is currently the subject of a DOD enquiry. The footage itself provides a unique insight into the moral and legal complexities of modern counter-insurgency warfare.
The Institute of Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC) and the Oxford Programme on the Changing Character of War (CCW) are co-hosting a screening of the footage followed by a discussion with introductions by Prof Henry Shue (Philosophy) and Dapo Akande (Law).
Due to a high level of interest, pre-registration is required for this event. Please email lucy.crittenden@politics.ox.ac.uk to secure your place.
